Nissan CVT shudder, whine or slipping: what it costs to fix

You got quoted thousands for a new transmission and you're not sure if that's fair. Here are the signs of a worn CVT, the cheaper fixes to rule out first, and what the part really costs, so you can talk to your shop with real numbers.

See real prices for your car's CVT. We'll find 2-3 options for your exact car, usually a remanufactured unit with a warranty and the CVT fluid it needs, with the price you'd pay, shipped to you or straight to your mechanic. Finding prices is free.

Signs your CVT is wearing out

Shudder or judder pulling away

A shake or vibration from a stop or at low speed, like driving over rumble strips. Often the first sign.

Whine or drone that rises with speed

A steady whine or a droning hum on the freeway that wasn't there before.

Revs climb, the car doesn't

The engine speed flares up but the car is slow to pick up, or it hesitates when you press the gas.

Limp mode or a warning light

The car suddenly feels weak and won't go much past 20 to 40 mph, often with a check-engine light. Nissan CVT faults commonly log codes such as P17F0 (judder) or a CVT temperature code.

Rule these out before you buy a transmission

Check the fluid and the service history

CVT fluid wears out. Nissan specifies its own NS-2 or NS-3 CVT fluid depending on the model, and the wrong fluid can cause judder on its own. If the car has never had a CVT fluid change, a correct drain and fill is the cheap first step.

Ask the dealer about updates and your warranty

Nissan has released software updates for some CVT judder complaints, and has extended CVT warranty coverage on some models in the past. Give the dealer your VIN and ask whether any update, bulletin or extended coverage applies. It costs nothing to ask.

Ask whether it is the valve body

Some shudder and shift faults come from the CVT's valve body, the hydraulic control unit, not the whole transmission. A remanufactured valve body sells for a few hundred dollars. Ask your shop if they tested for it before quoting a full unit.

What it really costs

New unit from the dealer

About $5,000 to $8,000 for the transmission alone, before labor.

Typical shop quote, installed

Cost guides put a Nissan CVT replacement at about $3,500 to $8,000 all in. Labor is usually 6 to 12 hours, which at LA shop rates of $150 to $180 an hour is often $1,000 to $2,000 of the bill.

Remanufactured CVT

Rebuilt units with a warranty were selling from roughly $2,250 to $4,400 for a 2014 to 2017 Rogue when we last checked, plus freight. Many carry a 1 to 3 year warranty and a refundable core charge for your old unit.

The labor is the same whichever unit goes in. The part is where you save, which is why it pays to see the prices before you say yes.

If you go remanufactured

Match the unit to your VIN, not just the model and year, since one model year can use different CVTs. Ship it to the shop that will install it. Ask the shop to fill it with the correct Nissan CVT fluid and keep the receipt, because most reman warranties ask for both. Return the old unit to get the core charge back.

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace a Nissan CVT?

Cost guides put it at about $3,500 to $8,000 installed. The part is the big swing: a new dealer unit runs about $5,000 to $8,000, while remanufactured units with a warranty often cost a few thousand less. Labor is usually 6 to 12 hours.

Is a remanufactured CVT any good?

A good one is rebuilt to spec, tested, and sold with a real warranty, often 1 to 3 years. Read the warranty: many require a professional install, the correct Nissan CVT fluid, and a cooler flush or new cooler, and they won't pay out without receipts.

Can a CVT fluid change fix shudder?

Sometimes, if the fluid is old or the wrong type and the problem is caught early. It won't fix worn internal parts. If the shudder comes back soon after a correct fluid change, the valve body or the whole unit is the next suspect.

What is the core charge?

A refundable deposit added to a remanufactured transmission. You get it back when your old unit is returned to the seller, usually on the same pallet the new one came on. Your shop handles the swap and the return.

Which Nissans have CVT problems?

Complaints are most common on Rogue, Altima, Sentra, Versa, Juke, Murano and Pathfinder model years from about 2013 to 2018, but any high-mileage CVT can wear out. Your VIN tells us exactly which unit your car has.

Can I have the transmission shipped to my mechanic?

Yes, and you should. A transmission ships on a pallet and needs a shop to install it. On our request form, put your installer's name and address as the shipping address and tell them it is coming.

This is general guidance, not a diagnosis of your car. Prices change; the figures above were checked in October 2026. A shop that can scan and road test the car is the best judge of what failed.
